Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, three prominent Chinese smartphone manufacturers, have seen remarkable growth in their sales, emerging as formidable competitors to industry giants Apple and Samsung. Data from Stocklytics.com reveals that these three companies have collectively shipped over 2.6 billion smartphones over the past decade.

Annual Shipments Increased by Over 460%

The trajectory of Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo has shifted dramatically over the last ten years. In 2014, they were relatively unknown in the smartphone arena, but today they account for nearly one-third of global smartphone sales. Several factors contribute to this impressive rise.

These vendors are recognized for their competitive pricing strategies, providing high-quality smartphones at affordable prices, making them especially appealing in emerging markets where price sensitivity is crucial. They have also successfully attracted users by creating robust ecosystems that integrate their smartphones with a range of other smart devices. Additionally, geopolitical tensions between Western countries and China have further fueled their sales within the domestic market, one of the largest globally. Consequently, these three brands have experienced a significant surge in annual shipments.

According to data from Statista and IDC, Xiaomi alone shipped approximately 47 million smartphones in 2024, while Oppo and Vivo’s sales figures remain undisclosed. When the three brands released their sales figures a year later, their combined annual shipments exceeded 135 million. This figure grew to 255 million three years later, and by the end of 2022, shipments rose by another 23%, reaching 316 million.

2021 marked a record year for Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, with their combined shipments soaring to nearly 453 million. Although sales dropped in 2022 and 2023 due to a decline in the overall market, the three brands still sold 270 million devices, representing a 460% increase compared to a decade ago.

Preliminary shipment data for the first half of 2024 suggests it could be one of the strongest years for these brands, with combined shipments hitting 180 million—21 million more than the same period in the previous year. Xiaomi led the growth, selling 83.1 million devices during this period, a 30% increase from the first half of 2023. Vivo’s shipments also rose by 10%, from 42.5 million to 46.7 million.

Market Share Has Tripled in Ten Years

With billions of devices shipped over the past decade, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have solidified their positions in the smartphone market, as reflected in their market share data.

In 2015, Samsung held approximately 25% of global smartphone sales, while Apple commanded 18%. At that time, the combined market share of the top three Chinese vendors was just 9.3%. Since then, their market share has tripled, reaching 32.9% in Q2 2024.

The rise of these Chinese brands has contributed to a decline in market share for the leading players, Samsung and Apple. Statistics indicate that Samsung’s market share fell from 25% to around 19% during this period, while Apple experienced a smaller decline of 2.2%, holding a 15.8% market share in Q2 2024.
