The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and Sweden’s Ministry for Climate and Enterprise are set to co-host “Roadmaps to New Nuclear 2024,” a key event aimed at exploring concrete strategies for significantly expanding nuclear energy production to combat climate change. Scheduled for 19-20 September 2024 in Paris, this event will gather ministers, CEOs, and leaders from around the world. Co-chaired by Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch, and NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV, it marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing global conversation about the role of nuclear energy in achieving climate targets.

Building on the success of Roadmaps to New Nuclear 2023, where over 20 countries pledged at COP28 to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050, this high-level meeting will bring together senior government officials and industry leaders to share insights, discuss recent developments, and outline critical next steps for scaling nuclear energy. While last year’s event charted a general course for collective action, Roadmaps 2024 will focus on the practical steps required to help countries move forward with nuclear new build projects.

Key sessions will explore vital issues such as unlocking access to large amounts of capital at competitive rates, building robust and resilient supply chains, and addressing the need for a skilled workforce to support the expanding nuclear sector. This collaborative platform aims to strengthen international partnerships, foster the exchange of best practices, and support countries in meeting their national nuclear energy goals.

As countries seek to re-establish capacities for nuclear energy projects, Roadmaps to New Nuclear 2024 will provide valuable insights to inform actionable policy recommendations for governments, the nuclear industry, and global energy stakeholders. The discussions will also play a key role in shaping the nuclear agenda leading up to COP29, ensuring that nuclear energy remains central to global efforts to meet climate change targets effectively.
