In a significant development for the UK’s smart meter rollout, January 2024 saw a 30% increase in installations from the previous month, with a total of 221,000 installations being recorded.
This progress reflects a 21% boost from the corresponding month last year, representing the most substantial January installation figures since the pre-pandemic days of January 2020, according to ElectraLink’s insights.
The increase in new meter installations is seen as a critical step forward, achieving the highest January installation numbers since the Covid-19 pandemic initially impacted the programme.
ElectraLink’s report also notes a dramatic decrease in installations in April 2020, plummeting to 12,000 due to the social distancing protocols in place at that time.
With the smart meter rollout commencing in 2012, ElectraLink has documented a cumulative 22.48 million installations. January’s installation figures were led by regions with traditionally high rates, with East England at 27,000 installations, followed by southern England with 25,000 and the East Midlands at 21,000.
